Entrepreneurship: Business Development and Collaboration for Economic Growth
and Improvement of Product Quality and Safety
The multiple veterinary worlds of research, governmental services, and product
development and distribution will come together in a one and one-half day conference
on October 18 and 19, 2005. The objective of this technical assistance program
is to discuss concepts of entrepreneurship and technology transfer and to collectively
explore the opportunities of working collaboratively to address shared needs.
The conference will introduce the concept and benefits of technology transfer;
present models for collaborations between government, academia, and industry;
discuss strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of potential initiatives;
and discuss mechanisms of effectively growing existing entrepreneurial enterprises.
In addition, focus groups will identify potential areas for which collaborations
can be established in Serbia and Montenegro, and explore workable models of
collaboration to address those areas.
The expected outcomes of the conference are to develop:
- Greater understanding
of business methods useful in entrepreneurial initiatives
- A specific industry
problem list that could be addressed by researchers
- Dialogue among researchers,
industry groups, and governmental veterinarians
- Outlines of models for potential
collaborations among industry and university groups
- Proposal outlines for
potential collaborations
- A collective Research Agenda to be used to gain
support
The program will be lead by Dr. Eldon K. Uhlenhopp, Coordinator for Livestock
Security and Bioterrorism Defense at the Iowa State University Outreach Academy,
and Senior Veterinary Advisor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA),
Foreign Agricultural Service, International Cooperation and Development division.
Dr. Uhlenhopp has over 30 years experience in animal health care delivery,
animal health public policy, and veterinary education. Presenting a major portion
of the program will be Mr. Jon Leafstedt, an international business management
consultant. Mr. Leafstedt draws upon an eighteen-year marketing and management
career in global agribusiness to assist clients in the areas of product and
strategy development, communications, strategic alliances, regulatory issues,
and financial management. The third presenter is Dr. Gregory Phillips, associate
professor of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine at the Iowa State
University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Phillips teaches and conducts
research in the field of bacterial genetics and molecular biology, and has
extensive experience in working with biological companies in bringing discoveries
from the laboratory to the marketplace and will present significant findings
from those experiences.

Različiti veterinarski sektori iz oblasti istraživanja, vladinih službi, razvoja
i distribucije proizvoda učestvovaće u jednodnevnoj i jednoipodnevnoj konferenciji
18. i 19. oktobra 2005. godine. Cilj ovog programa tehničke pomoći jeste diskusija
o konceptima preduzetništva i prenosa tehnologije, kao i zajedničko istraživanje
mogućnosti saradnje i rada na zajedničkim potrebama.
Na konferenciji će se predstaviti koncept i korisni elementi prenosa tehnologije;
biće predstavljeni modeli saradnje između vlade, akademskog sektora i industrije;
raspravljaće se o snagama, slabostima, mogućnostima i pretnjama mogućih incijativa;
a govoriće se i o mehanizmima efektivnog razvoja postojećih preduzetničkih
firmi. Takođe, fokus grupe će odrediti moguće oblasti i modele u kojima se
može ostvariti saradnja u Srbiji i Crnoj Gori.
Na konferenciji se očekuju sledeći rezultati:
- Bolje razumevanje poslovnih
metoda koji su korisni za preduzetničke inicijative
- Lista određenih industrijskih
problema na koju istraživači mogu ukazati
- Dijalog između istraživača, industrijskih
grupa i vladinih veterinara
- Modeli moguće saradnje između industrije i univerzitetskih
grupa
- Nacrti predloga moguće saradnje
- Zajednički plan istraživanja koji će se
koristiti da bi se pridobila podrška.
Program će voditi Dr. Eldon Julenhop (Dr. Eldon K. Uhlenhopp), koordinator
za bezbednost stočarstva i odbranu od bioterorizma na Ajova Državnom Univerzitetu
