United States Service Academies
A large number of America's officers enter the officer corps through the
service academy system. The Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant
Marine have their own academies. (The Naval Academy supports the Marines
Corps as well as the Navy.) Each academy offers a four-year course of study.
Upon graduation from a service academy, each graduate receives a bachelor's
degree and an officer's commission in a selected branch of the armed forces.
Each of the academies reserves a number of slots every year for foreign
candidates.
U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York
The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, was established in 1802
and is on the site of the oldest regularly garrisoned military post in the
United States. West Point is charged with educating, training and inspiring
young people to provide the Army with leaders of character.
U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland
Founded as the Naval School in 1845, the United States Naval Academy at
Annapolis, Maryland, today is a four-year service academy that prepares midshipmen
morally, mentally and physically to be professional officers in the Navy
and Marine Corps.
U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado
Established in 1954, the Air Force Academy is the newest of the service
academies. Its mission is to develop and inspire air and space leaders with
vision for tomorrow. The goal of this 4-year institution is to produce officers
who have the knowledge, character, and motivation essential to leadership,
pride in all they do, and commitment to an Air Force career.
U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut
Founded in 1876, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy has a proud tradition as one
of the finest colleges in the country. The Academy’s philosophy is belief
in your country, belief in your fellow cadets and Coast Guard personnel and
belief in yourself. The Academy is committed to a course of study that provides
the professional knowledge, skills and experience needed to succeed as an
officer.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York
The Academy was dedicated in 1943, but it represents maritime training that
is more than a century old. The Academy’s Mission is to educate officers
and leaders of honor and integrity who are dedicated to serving their countries'
economic, transportation and defense interests.
College and University Officer Training Programs
In addition to the Department of Defense-run Service Academies, another
important source of officers for the United States military is the officer-training
program available through a select group of public and private universities
and colleges. As in the Service Academies, students in these programs work
towards both a bachelors degree and an officer's commission via a demanding
curriculum of military and general educational courses.
