Ambassador Visits Viminacium Archaeological Site in Serbia

On June 30, Ambassador Polt visited Viminacium, one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeastern Europe, situated on the banks of Danube in Eastern Serbia. The Ambassador stressed the importance of preserving Serbia's rich cultural heritage, and called upon local leaders to support the efforts to protect Viminacium.

The visit was hosted by Dr. Miomir Korac, the director of the site, and Prof. Michael Werner from the University at Albany, State University of New York (UAlbany), who established a very successful collaboration between the two institutions several years ago. Ambassador Polt also met with a group of American students from UAlbany, the fourth group to work to visit Serbia to take part in the excavation efforts with their Serbian counterparts.

The Viminacium site is of great significance because of its size, its prominence as the civilian and military capital of the Roman province of Moesia Superior, and because of its very well preserved structures, frescoes and over 32,000 artifacts including one of the earliest depictions of the monogram of Christ found to date. The site, which covers 450 hectares, includes a Roman aqueduct (one of only four and the first to be discovered in the Balkans), a significant legion camp, temples, a theatre and hippodrome, and living quarters. Preliminary estimates date the site to the end of the first century A.D.
