SERBIA YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
This program supports the development of democracy and citizen activism in Serbia by providing youth (aged 15-17) and adults (teachers or community members who work with youth) with an opportunity to participate in projects focused on civic education, leadership, conflict resolution, and community activism. The four-week, U.S.-based projects include workshops, hands-on community service activities, site visits with community organizations, and discussion groups. Activities are based both in school and in the community and involve as much interaction with American peers as possible. Homestays are also important part of the exchange experience.
This year US Government is sponsoring 6 such exchanges for the total number of 120 high school students and 10 adult participants. There are two organizations that administer the program this year:
- American Councils for International Cooperation, and
- World Learning and their local partner, Civic Initiatives.
The competition for 2009/2010 school year is open for the high school students and adults who live or go to school in any one of the following towns/municipalities: Srbobran, Vrbas, Novi Beograd, Raska, Novi Pazar, Uzice, Blace, Kikinda, Obrenovac, Palilula, Savski venac, Smederevo, Sokobanja, and Zrenjanin.
