Ambassador Munter Presided over the Graduation Ceremony of Serbia's Norman Borlaug Program

In a festive event organized by FAS on May 26, Ambassador Cameron Munter attended the graduation ceremony of the fourth-year class of USDA's Norman Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program (Borlaug Fellows Program) and presented the graduating Serbian Fellows with the program certificates. In his remarks, Ambassador Munter highlighted the excellent cooperation between the U.S. and Serbian agricultural and scientific institutions. The USDA has established the Borlaug Program in honor of the Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, the father of the Green Revolution who saved millions of people in Africa and Asia from starvation. Dr. Borlaug is also the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. The goal of the Borlaug Program is to help developing countries strengthen their agricultural economy through the transfer of new agricultural science and technologies. The program provides short-term scientific training for international agricultural scientists and policy makers at U.S. Land Grant Universities. The program encompasses a wide variety of agricultural technologies, including those related to production, processing, marketing and policy. With 64 graduates, Serbia is the biggest recipient of Borlaug fellowships since the program's initiation four years ago that now covers 31 countries. In 2007/08, 11 Serbian Fellows participated in the program at four U.S. Universities: Michigan State University, Ohio State University, University of Missouri and University of Nebraska.
