Education in the United States

The doors of U.S. educational institutions are open to all qualified students from around the world. The United States is proud of an educational system that attracts students and scholars from across the globe. In the words of President Bush, "We … encourage international students to take part in our educational system. ....The relationships that are formed between individuals from different countries, as part of international education programs and exchanges ...foster goodwill that develops into vibrant, mutually beneficial partnerships among nations."

A Diverse Education System

The U.S. does not have a national school system. The federal government provides funding and guidance for some national programs, however schools are run locally. From Hawaii to Delaware, from Alaska to Louisiana, each of the 50 states has its own laws regulating education.

Almost 90% of elementary and high school students in the U.S. attend public schools. Students may choose to attend a public or private school. All schools can draw upon resources from several different public and private institutions.

Over 60% of students go on to higher education. The United States leads the industrial nations in the proportion of its young people who receive higher education. For some careers -- law, medicine, education, engineering -- a college education is a necessary first step.
